Striving to Serve

Dorothy Day       Dorothy Day is a woman who started a movement of change in Catholic social justice teaching and inspired many people with her commitment to serving others. She is an incredible example of many of the characteristics of servant leadership. Her humility and love of others inspired a whole movement for social change. Her dedication to putting others first and her foresight set her apart as an example of a true servant leader.       Dorothy was born in Brooklyn, NY to a middle-class family on November 8, 1897. When she was 16, Dorothy received a scholarship and enrolled at the University of Illinois. It was there that she pursued a degree in journalism and began to develop many ideas about social justice issues. In her early career, she worked for the New York Call, a socialist newspaper.        Mother Teresa is, without a doubt, one of my biggest role models and one of my heroes. I currently have three Mother Teresa quotes in my room and I have always been inspired by her faith and her story. But beyond the surface of my love for her is a deep respect for the way she acted as a leader. She truly knew the meaning of servant leadership and lived a life devoted to her faith and the ideals of servant leadership.       Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910 to a Catholic family in Albania.
